The 7.4 magnitude earthquake and tsunami in Sulawesi Island on Friday 28 September has tragically killed over 2,000 people, and injured more than 5,000 others. Communities have seen their houses, schools and hospitals reduced to rubble. Entire villages have been decimated.
UNHCR dispatched airlifts including emergency tents and core relief items such as sleeping mats, mosquito nets and solar lamps, providing shelter and support to around 20,000 people made homeless by the disaster. A total of 1.5 million people are estimated to be affected by this disaster.
On 22 December, another unfortunate tsunami hit the islands of Sumatra and Java, killing hundreds and injuring thousands.
